8TH GRADE MATH LINKS TO PREP FOR MAY 19!

These sites are for student use in the classroom. Several of them would be appropriate for students to use at home also.

 

Using Virtual Geoboards http://standards.nctm.org/document/eexamples/chap4/4.2/index.htm This web site has the ability to entice everyone from the slowest of learners to the most advanced. They can grab a virtual rubber band and stretch it in any direction to make geometric figures. This gives the whole classroom a new dimension of problem solving and an understanding of building geometric figures and making comparisons among them.

On this site, a student can use the virtual pattern blocks just as they would use hands-on pattern blocks or paper and pencil to draw and answer questions about mathematical questions.

The section for math has links to sites providing quality online materials from 35 federal agencies.

 

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for Interactive Mathematics

http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/index.html  A great site for classroom use and all the virtual manipulatives are free to use. They are sorted by numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability, and are subdivided by grade.

Kid-oriented site hosts a variety of online educational math games; it is ad-supported.

 

Brainpop.com    http://www.brainpop.com

A great source for educational videos to introduce and support lessons.

 

These are sites for teacher’s use and feature many ways to integrate technology into daily lesson plans.

Dana Center Teacher Quality Type A math modules

This page is devoted to all the Teacher Quality Type A math modules, based on state standards, and is classroom deliverable. Modules are available for middle school, Algebra I and II, geometry and pre-calculus.

 

 

Hand Made Manipulative Instructions

Provides a set of templates for handmade manipulatives that can be printed off the page.

A rich resource for teachers with features like “Ask Dr. Math” which offers answers to general math problems, and “Teacher2Teacher” offers resources for teaching mathematics.

This site helps teachers stay current with educational research and improve practice in every subject area. It offers free streaming video discussion and training. The trainings are free and the schedules are posted in advance.
